Harbaughs move on after sharing Thanksgiving (AP)

BALTIMORE ? The Harbaugh brothers met in the middle of the field, hugged, expressed their love for each other and headed off in opposite directions.

After their much-anticipated, oft-analyzed and historic confrontation was over, John and Jim Harbaugh expressed gratitude over having the opportunity to face each other on Thanksgiving.

John was just little bit happier, of course, because his Baltimore Ravens beat Jim’s San Francisco 49ers 16-6 Thursday night.

“I felt really humble, just thankful,” John said. “Running across the field to my brother ? he’s my best friend, along with Mom and Dad and my wife. You don’t put yourself in many other coaches’ shoes, but you can put yourself in your brother’s shoes. I’m really proud of him.”

Although the 49ers (9-2) had their eight-game winning streak end, Jim Harbaugh was thankful for the experience of coaching against John in the first NFL game with two brothers on opposite sidelines as head coaches.

“I was proud to be part of it, proud to be part of the family,” Jim said. “I was thankful on Thanksgiving. It was a wonderful thing.”

Asked what he said to John, he replied, “I congratulated him and told him I loved him.”

John, 49, and Jim, 47, grew up dueling each other in all sorts of games. This, however, was the first time their sibling rivalry was displayed on a national stage.

During the final minute, John got a Gatorade bath from his players ? twice. After the game ended, the brothers hugged at midfield.

“There’s a saying that says, `As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another,’” Jim said. “And I have to say my brother John is the sharpest iron I’ve ever encountered in my life.”

The Ravens (8-3) sacked 49ers quarterback Alex Smith nine times, tying a franchise record, despite playing without middle linebacker Ray Lewis, the team’s leading tackler and spiritual leader. Lewis was inactive for a second straight game with a foot injury.

Smith completed 15 of 24 passes for 140 yards and an interception, and San Francisco was held without a touchdown for the first time this season. Smith never could get into a rhythm against an aggressive defense that rarely let him set up in the pocket.

“It’s tough to get ready for a defense like that in a short week. They do so many things,” he said. “They’re a great front. At home with the crowd noise, they were teeing off.”

Terrell Suggs had three sacks for first-place Baltimore, which moved a half-game ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North.

“That’s always the game plan, to get after the quarterback, but I think the No. 1 game plan was to win the Harbaugh Bowl,” Suggs said. “Coach tried to downplay it ? act like it’s not me against my brother, this is the Ravens vs. the 49ers and let’s get win No. 8 and make sure our destiny is in our own hands ? but it was really important to him. We as a team went out there and really wanted to win for him.”

Now that it’s over, the Harbaughs can put their rivalry on hold and get back to winning football games for reasons that involve division crowns and home-field advantage.

“For those two guys, they’re probably glad it’s over,” Ravens center Matt Birk said. “They can breathe a sigh of relief, and now we can move on. Tonight just solidified that they’re two great coaches with two pretty good football teams.”

Baltimore broke a 6-6 tie with a 76-yard, 16-play drive that lasted more than 7 1/2 minutes and ended with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Joe Flacco to tight end Dennis Pitta with 14:56 left. Flacco went 4 for 4 for 34 yards and a touchdown on third down during the drive.

“When you have that kind of game plan ? your line being so efficient on third downs ? you have to come through,” Flacco said.

Billy Cundiff wrapped up the scoring with his third field goal, a 39-yarder with 4:16 remaining.

In a game dominated by both defenses, Flacco finished 15 for 23 for 161 yards and Ray Rice ran for 59 yards on 21 carries.

The 49ers began the third quarter with a 13-play drive that lasted 7 1/2 minutes and produced a 52-yard field goal by David Akers for a 6-6 tie. The key play was an 18-yard completion from Smith to Michael Crabtree on a third-and-17 from the San Francisco 26.

The Ravens responded with their lone touchdown drive of the game.

Baltimore sacked Smith four times in the first half and picked off a pass in taking a 6-3 lead.

Mars Science Laboratory, a one-ton chemistry lab on wheels set for launch Saturday morning from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is geared for a unique mission.

We’re not quite ready to hunt for life itself yet, and the MSL rover isn’t designed to do so, say researchers taking part in the $2.5-billion mission to the red planet.

But after a decade of “following the water” ? a necessary ingredient for life as researchers currently understand it ? planetary scientists are moving to take the next critical step: see if water co-existed with other critical environmental conditions that could have allowed simple forms of life to emerge.

Organisms on Earth take the forms they do because they are adapted to their environments, MSL researchers explain. If humans eventually hunt for evidence of life itself on the Red Planet, or anywhere else, for that matter, knowing something about the environment organisms inhabit will yield clues about what the organisms were or are like.

“If a Tim Allen, ‘Galaxy Quest,’ alien rock creature were to come up and bang us on the head, we don’t want to ignore it. That would be the ‘Ah ha!’ moment we’d regret having missed,” says Steve Brenner, director of the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution in Gainesville, Fla.

For Mars, the incremental Holy Grail is finding organic carbon, the stuff of complex molecules that form the building blocks for life, according to John Grotzinger, a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif., and the mission’s project scientist.

“It’s a long shot, but we’re going to try,” he said during a prelaunch briefing this week..

Meteorites deposit organic compounds on the Martian surface all the time, but today’s conditions are so harsh that the compounds are quickly destroyed, he explains.

Finding organic carbon captured in the layered rocks that the rover Curiosity will explore would indicate that at the time the layers were deposited, conditions on the surface at that location could well have been far more benign, allowing organic compounds to exist at the surface.

Set for launch at 10:02 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Saturday, Curiosity holds a TripTik that sets the rover into Mars’ Gale Crater next August.

The oversized ding in Mars’ crust is 96 miles across, about 3 miles deep, and sports a gently sloping mountain in its center that rises to a height comparable to California’s Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 states.

Some researchers crudely estimate the impact crater’s age at between 3.5 billion and 3.8 billion years old.

Black Friday shoppers get bargains, less brouhaha

Extended Black Friday hours may have angered those store employees who had to work before their turkey dinners were digested, but many shoppers were happy with this year’s earlier store opening times because they found fewer raucous crowds and shorter lines as a result.

?This was the absolute calmest Black Friday I have ever experienced,? said Nathan Luna, 24, who began his shopping trek at 12:08 a.m. this morning and headed to Best Buy in Wheaton, Md.

While things may have been more relaxed, projections for the number of consumers heading out on the biggest shopping day of the year are up.

According to?data compiled for the National Retail Federation by BIGresearch, up to 152 million people plan to shop over the Black Friday weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), that’s higher than the 138 million people who planned to do so last year. According to the survey, 74 million people say they will definitely hit the stores and another 77 million are waiting to see if the bargains are worth braving the cold and the crowds.

Overall, electronics and clothing were among the biggest scores for many consumers, especially video game players and high-end fashions. And many shoppers said they found the sales items they wanted, unlike past Black Fridays that offered slim pickings; and lots of sales people to help them navigate the stores.

Here are some first-hand accounts of the day and deals from Black Friday aficionados:

?The crowds were very well-behaved,? said Brad Williams, 39, an analyst for Duke University who headed out at 9:15 p.m. last night with his wife Wendy. ?The line at Target, as I said, was enormous, but my wife said that the people there were jovial and pretty Zen about the wait. No pushing or shoving whatsoever.?

The couple has two young kids, but grandparents take the kids after Thanksgiving dinner to their house so Brad and his wife can shop unfettered.

“The crowds seemed to be bigger this year at Target and Kohl’s, but smaller elsewhere,” Williams added. “I think that has to do with when we arrived. We were in the teeth of the initial rush at those two places, but by the time we got to Crabtree, about 3 a.m., that had subsided and the second rush, when non-crazy people are getting up, hadn’t yet begun.”

The deals overall were good, he said, but his ?best bargains? were ?a pair of Lucky Brand jeans for my wife, which were $18 (original outlet price was $69.50, they were on clearance for $30, and 40 percent off that), and a Brooks Brothers sports shirt, which was $29.90.?

Anna Staab, 51, Metamora, Il., hit the stores around 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving and found lots of merchandise available at Walmart and Menards, a regional department store chain. ?After seeing plenty of merchandise left at Walmart at this hour we wondered if it had something to do with the economy or if people were just avoiding it due to the earlier hours,? she surmised.

Staab, a retired Post Master who has seven kids living with her, some foster, some adopted and some biological, said she needed to be out early to get the big bargains and ended up with quite a few.

Her biggest complaint was where Walmart placed the sales items.

?Big box items, i.e. trampoline, ping pong table, power ride on toys, were all at the back of the store. Customers had to fight the crowds with the huge boxes,? she explained. ?They need a better system for those.?

And?Staab didn’t like that many retailers staggered sales throughout the night.

“Certain things went on sale at 10 p.m. Thursday, then midnight, then 8 a.m.,” she noted.

Besides a few annoyances, she was able to get the one thing she really wanted. She’s most proud of the Xbox with Kinect she got at Walmart for $199 and a $50 Walmart card included, about half the price it was last year.

The iPad 2 was the only thing Nathan Luna was looking for.

He arrived at the Best Buy in Wheaton, Md., at 12:20 a.m. and found the parking log jammed and a line of more than 700 people.

?Less-experienced Black Friday shoppers would have probably turned around in horror, but I pressed on,? said Luna, a TV photographer for Canadian Television who has been Black Friday shopping since he was a kid when he shopped with his mom and grandmother.

Lines formed at the Best Buy in Wheaton, Md., and police were on hand to keep things moving smoothly.

Despite the crowds, he said, a group of police officers helped shuffle shoppers into the store and the line within 20 minutes after the store opened.

There were big crowds at the Best Buy in Wheaton, Md., but lines moved quickly, according to one shopper.

?I was greeted by a wall of Dynex 32-inch TVs and thousands of people jamming up the aisles,? he described. ?I asked the greeter where the iPads were, and he directed me to the back of the store. I had to bump a few elbows to get back there, but when I did, I noticed something new.?

Instead of a line snaking around the entire store, he said, there were check-out lines scattered throughout the store near key items.

?When I got in the iPad line, I literally had eleven people in front of me,? he said, adding that it took about a half hour to check out, compared to the hours it has taken during past Black Fridays.

He eventually got his iPad for $454.

Mice with fewer insulin-signaling receptors don’t live longer

Scientists studying longevity thought it might be good to lack a copy of a gene, called IGF1 receptor, that is important in insulin signaling. Previous studies showed invertebrates that lacked the copy lived longer, even if their bodies were less responsive to insulin, the hormone that lowers blood sugar.

A new study from The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio challenges this. Knocking out one copy of the gene failed to increase the life span of male mice, and it only modestly increased the life span of female littermates.

Martin Adamo, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, and Arlan Richardson, Ph.D., professor of cellular and structural biology, lead the laboratories that conducted the study. “Our data show insufficiency of this insulin-signaling gene does not produce a robust increase in life span as previously reported in invertebrates,” Dr. Richardson said.

Dr. Adamo said: “This demonstrates that reducing insulin signaling through the IGF1 pathway in mammals does not play the same role in aging that is observed in invertebrates.”

A receptor is a molecule on a cell’s membrane that receives chemical signals. Knocking down the genetic instructions that make IGF1 receptors results in reduced insulin signaling.

Astronomers take a photograph of the youngest supernova right after its explosion

ScienceDaily (Nov. 24, 2011) ? Astronomers have obtained a never-before achieved radio astronomical photograph of the youngest supernova. Fourteen days after the explosion of a star in the galaxy Gal?xia del Remol? (M51) last June, coordinated telescopes around Europe have taken a photograph of the cosmic explosion in great detail — equivalent to seeing a golf ball on the surface of the moon.

The University of Valencia and the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia took part in this research. The results will be published this week in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics. The telescopes participating in the research were NASA’s telescopes at Robledo de Chavela (Madrid) and those of the National Geographic Institute in Yebes (Guadalajara).

Barely at 23 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Llebrers, Gal?xia El Remol? can be the scene of one of the most violent phenomena in the universe, despite its beautiful appearance: the death of a star in the shape of a supernova explosion. Several combined telescopes spread over Spain, Sweden, Germay and Finland, and the data processing by means of a supercomputer in The Netherlands, enable to have the capacity of a telescope measuring thousands of kilometres. Thus, a really clear image has been obtained, with a detail a hundred times greater than that of the space telescope Hubble. This technique, known as radio interferometry, has allowed Iv?n Mart? and his team to take a photograph of the supernovova SN2011dh just some days after its explosion.
