‘Survivor One World’ Finale: Predicting The Winner

Former ‘Survivor’ contestant Rob Cesternino weighs in on the final five contestants vying for the title of Sole Survivor.

A foulmouthed special-ed teacher, a medical-sales-repping Southern belle, an indecisive career consultant from Hollywood, a sneaky bridal shop owner and a high school teacher from Brooklyn: These are the women competing for the million-dollar prize on Sunday night’s (May 13) “Survivor: One World” season finale.

In a season dominated by just one contestant — 29-year-old Kim Spradlin, who has won numerous immunity challenges and forged multiple alliances to get to the endgame — predicting the “One World” winner isn’t quite as challenging as it’s been in “Survivor” seasons of yore. But this is “Survivor” we’re talking about, and twists are the name of the game. There’s no shortage of curveballs that could be thrown at the final five contestants in tonight’s race for the Sole Survivor title.

As we’ve done all season long, MTV News joined forces with two-time “Survivor” contestant and regular commentator Rob Cesternino once again for his final “One World” predictions.

Most Likely to Win: Kim Spradlin
“Since the departure of Colton, ‘Survivor: One World’ has been the season of Kim,” Cesternino said. “She’s been in control of every single thing that’s happened the whole way. She’s had her finger on the pulse of the game. She played an amazing game and I think it would be almost criminal if she did not win — barring a total collapse during the finale.”

Least Likely to Win: Christina Cha
“Christina at no point in the game has been in a favorable position,” Rob reasoned. “It seems unlikely to think that she’ll run off with two consecutive immunity challenges here at the end, when she’s never even been in the mix to win one immunity challenge. She doesn’t have the respect of the jury, considering some of those people were terrified by the possibility of going home before Christina. She hasn’t done anything to get there.”

Dark-Horse Pick: Sabrina Thompson
“I think she is very savvy,” the former player said. “I also think she’s well-liked by the jury. I think she could be an alternative to Kim in the finals, where she’s able to sit there and say, ‘Look, I didn’t lie to you, and I didn’t backstab you. That was all Kim. All of that bad stuff? Kim. I was here the whole way, and I was tough.’ Sabrina is someone who could at least get a couple of votes in the finals. Maybe, if the jury goes anti-Kim, she could potentially squeak out a victory.”

Worst-Case Scenario: Bitter Jury Syndrome
“I think it would be a shame if Kim makes it all the way to the finals and ends up losing the jury vote just as a way of getting back at her for voting out all of the men in the game,” Rob said. “It’s happened before on ‘Survivor,’ where the jury is bitter. I don’t think Kim’s social game has been lacking. It would be good to see someone who plays the best game get rewarded by the jury. Otherwise, as Russell Hantz has said before, the game would be flawed.”

Biggest Possible Surprise: Kim Goes at Four
“The most surprising thing that could happen at the end of the season, for me, would be that one of these players smartens up and realizes that Kim has had the immunity idol and can’t play it once she hits the final four. If she doesn’t win that immunity challenge, the smartest thing that any of them can do is to take her out,” Cesternino said. “If I’m Chelsea, and if I’m Sabrina, I don’t know how I’ve gone this far without ever trying to take out Kim. It kills me to see these players roll over and die and give this game to Kim as they’ve done all season. If they turned on her at the final four, I would be very surprised.”

Prasar Bharati exempted from paying income tax

In a major relief to the country?s public broadcaster, the Prasar Bharati has been exempted from paying any income tax, with the smooth passage of the Finance Bill in the Lok Sabha.

As per one of the amendments in the Finance Bill, 2012 which was passed by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, ?any income of Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India)? is now mentioned among entities who will not have to pay tax.

Though the Prasar Bharati does not pay income tax currently since it does not earn profits, the exemption comes as a big relief.

Till now Prasar Bharati had to maintain accounts at nearly 600 Drawing and Disbursal offices (DDOs) to meet the requirement of Income Tax procedures, officials said.

The public broadcaster will also be spared of the financial burden of engaging tax consultants and chartered accountants.

Officials of the Public Broadcaster said that while the decision to exempt Prasar Bharati from paying income tax was a welcome step, this demand had not found a very receptive audience among Finance Ministry officials for a long time.

?The proposal to exempt Prasar Bharati had been there but only after Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni examined the matter and decided to raise it with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee that the process caught pace,? a senior official said.

The official said that Prasar Bharati worked in national interest and the drain of its resources was ultimately being borne by the government.

?The exemption is an important step to improve Prasar Bharati?s financial affairs and also a great recognition of the important role it plays,? said the senior official.

Officials point out that the public broadcaster?s relations with the taxman have kept changing in the past.

Under Section 22 of the Prasar Bharati Act of 1997, it was exempted from paying income tax. The provision was, however, deleted in the Finance Act of 2002.

Following the changed rules, Prasar Bharati after consultations with the Finance Ministry, registered itself as a charitable organisation and availed tax benefits.

However, the Finance Act of 2008 again changed the rules and the definition of ?charitable purposes? was amended. The Finance Ministry said that it would decide whether an activity was charitable or not on case by case basis.

The Prasar Bharati took up the matter with the Central Board of Direct Taxes and sought to be treated as a ?charitable organisation? since it was a public broadcaster.

Official sources said that it was learnt that the group of ministers which was looking in to the affairs of Prasar Bharati had also felt that withdrawal of exemption from Tax would land Prasar Bharati in financial hardship.

Despite North Carolina’s constitutional ban of same-sex marriage, the issue’s supporters had reason for celebration Wednesday (May 9): President Barack Obama has officially backed gay marriage.

The news became a trending topic on Twitter almost instantly, with the social-networking site’s millions of users — including celebrities — issuing countless tweets of thanks to the president.

“Bravo, Mr. President, and thank you,” Neil Patrick Harris a
tweeted. The actor is engaged to his longtime partner, David Burtka, and the pair adopted twins together in 2010.

“Open our hearts & minds! Proud of Obama for speaking up,” wrote “Glee” actress Dianna Agron, with co-star Chris Colfer tacking his happy thoughts onto those of Ellen DeGeneres: “I second! RT @TheEllenShow: Thank you President @BarackObama for your beautiful and brave words. I’m overwhelmed.”

“Star Trek” and “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” star Simon Pegg summed things up succinctly with initials and an emoticon: “GO BO!!! :) ”

If there were awards handed out for the most LOL-inducing celeb tweet, that would go to “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who had a message for the first lady and his partner: “With @MichelleObama & @JustinMikita permission I would like to marry @BarackObama right now!”

Even more excited was Kim Kardashian, who had way more than 140 characters to express on the subject, so she took to her website. “This is such a huge step forward in our country’s fight for civil rights and I hope that today this will give hope to so many young people across the country,” she wrote. “We’ve never had a president so supportive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and today I am proud to be an American!! I’m so happy that our country is making history and moving forward. No more living in the past!”

Twitter?s Mobile Site Now Uses One-Third Less Bandwidth

twitter logoTwitter just announced an update to its mobile site that is meant to bring it up to par with the new version of Twitter the company introduced in December. According to Twitter, the idea behind this update is to “give every person on the planet a consistent Twitter experience.” Because of this, the company says, the new version of the mobile site now uses one-third less bandwidth than the previous iteration and should work significantly better on feature phones, older browsers and low-bandwith connections.

Those secret space experiments you’ve been scheming? They may never happen if you try to go it alone. Fortunately, the space science group NCESSE can get you a ride, having started the countdown for its fifth wave of microgravity experiments aboard the International Space Station. US and international students from grade 5 up to university level can submit ideas until September 12th, 2012, with final culling by December 7. The mini-labs — which can include experiments in seed germination or crystal growth, for example — are set to be ferried aboard a SpaceX flight in April 2013. Three similar missions have flown nearly 60 student experiments already, with a fourth set as soon as the Falcon 9 craft deigns to go. Email widget takes on viral rumors, fact checks for you

If you’re one of those people who actually believes that Facebook is going to start charging users tomorrow, you’re probably going to want to skip this post. LazyTruth is working on a Gmail widget — something that could’ve easily been borne out of Google Labs — that will automatically vet your messages and determine if they’re full of viral misinformation. When it detects specific unique phrases that are consistent with known fallacies, it immediately circles back to Snopes.com and Factcheck.org (a pair of myth busting portals, if you couldn’t guess) to provide original source links and even rebuttals. It seems like it could be a great way to make us all even lazier more efficient when it comes to debunking some of the wilder rumors that tend to affect our most gullible friends. Of course, given that there’s no set release date just yet, perhaps the source link could use a scrubbing itself. We kid… we think.
